About
George Town Festival
First beginning as a series of arts and cultural events that celebrated George Town’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, George Town Festival now takes place every July, sharing the same month with George Town World Heritage Day. The annual festival is endorsed by the Penang State Government with the full support by the Municipal Council of Penang Island, George Town World Heritage Incorporated, and Penang Global Tourism in celebration of local and international works of art. Since its inception in 2010, George Town Festival has established itself as one of the region’s flagship cultural events, attracting participants and performers from all over the globe. George Town Festival aims to actively engage the local community in creating meaningful connections to the Heritage Site, helping to preserve and rejuvenate both living heritage and built heritage. It also showcases the city’s rich diversity of arts and culture — each year the festival develops a varied program that includes collaborations with international and local artists. Due to its significant social and economic impact, the festival has earned strong brand recognition over its many iterations, receiving international media coverage and acclaim. It has put George Town on the map of art enthusiasts and patrons, allowing them to discover, explore, and appreciate this city’s cultural heritage which has been more than 200 years in the making.
Returning for its fifteenth edition in 2024, a whole new way of experiencing arts will be brought forward with the management and curation by Kerson Media Global Sdn. Bhd. In 2024, GTF will delve into the theme “HERE & NOW”, spanning 10 days from July 19th to 28th.
