Isle to Isle 2025 is an outstanding cultural and creative exchange platform connecting the vibrant islands of Penang and Taiwan. This event promises to be a celebration of artistic expression, showcasing a rich tapestry of talents through three dynamic programmes: the toe-tapping “Three Generations, One Jazzy Heartbeat,” concert, the insightful “And All That Jazz—Stories of Malaysia and Taiwan,” sharing, and the thought-provoking dance performance “Birdy.”

Performed by The Stacey Wei Quartet—formed exclusively for the George Town Festival 2025 and consisting of four Taiwanese musicians from distinct generational backgrounds—and joined by one of Southeast Asia’s finest jazz pianists, composers, arrangers and producers Tay Cher Siang, “Three Generations, One Jazzy Heartbeat” aims to provide a microcosm of Taiwan’s jazz scene, featuring original compositions infused with Taiwanese cultural elements. Each piece weaves in personal stories and insights, enhancing the audience’s connection to the music.

The “And All That Jazz—Stories of Malaysia and Taiwan” sharing explores the profound influence of jazz across the Asian region, particularly in Penang and Taiwan. Stacey Wei, a prominent trumpeter and educator, has played a critical role in nurturing jazz talent in Taiwan. Rich Huang, celebrated as a national treasure, brings a wealth of experience from his groundbreaking career that spans multiple genres. Tay Cher Siang, a celebrated pianist and composer, adds a contemporary perspective, drawing on his deep connections within the music education community across Southeast Asia. Together, they will ensure a lively discussion on the evolution of jazz.

The dance performance “Birdy,” created by Lai Hung-Chung, delves into the complexities of freedom and constraint within Taiwanese society. Through rich metaphors of cages and dreams, it explores the tension between individual and community narratives. Lai’s creative interpretation reimagines traditional Chinese opera elements to symbolize personal struggles and societal roles. Using a mesmerizing blend of traditional and contemporary movements, grounded in an eclectic score, “Birdy” invites the audience to reflect on the delicate balance between aspiration and limitation, resonating with a universal quest for identity.

With such an impressive programme lineup, Isle to Isle 2025 promises to be a transformative experience that bridges cultures, generations, and art forms, celebrating the boundless creativity of Penang and Taiwan.
