The Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra was founded in Taiwan in 2011. The members are outstanding performers from music conservatories in Taiwan and prominent players from the Hsinchu City Juvenile & Youth Chinese Orchestra.

Aimed at promoting Chinese music, the orchestra organizes many concerts, music festivals and concert tours every year. Over the years the orchestra has successfully organized the Hsinchu Chinese Music festival under the leadership of the Artistic Director Liu Chiangbin. During the festival, the orchestra has collaborated with numerous world-renowned Chinese musicians and many extraordinary soloists. Their ability to create deep connections with audiences has won them a packed audience of every concert and favorable critical acclaim.

In 2011 the Orchestra was invited to Japan to hold benefit performances for the Fukushima disaster at Okayama, Osaka, and Kyoto. It was said that the Japanese audiences found consolation in the inspiring music. Since 2012, the Orchestra has held several concert tours and been invited to perform at many prestigious events in China and Taiwan. Seizing every performance and exchange opportunity, the Orchestra is devoted to excelling itself and promoting the beauty of traditional and contemporary Chinese music.

Conductor: Liu Chiangbin

Liu Chiangbin was born and grew up in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. He graduated with a B.M. in Suona Performance at Chinese Cultural University. From 1997 he was was a professional suona performer at the Taipei Chinese Orchestra; during the time, he was honored to premiere numbers of suona concertos by famous Taiwanese composers and toured in more than thirty countries around the world.

Liu has won several awards for his contributions to Chinese music education in Taiwan. In recent years, he has organized many international artistic performances including the Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival. He has also begun an active performance career at the mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. He has guest-conducted numerous professional ensembles around China and Asia.

Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra is part of Isle to Isle: Spotlight Taiwan Week

Isle to Isle is a collaboration between George Town Festival and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia (TECO), consisting of a layered series of programmes highlighting the very best of Taiwanese art scene, talent, knowledge and art administration.

Isle to Isle will be running 12-19 August 2018. Programmes hosted throughout the week will be an effort to showcase and create a discourse on Taiwanese performing arts and design and the use of creative spaces to generate a people-centric experience.

Isle to Isle is also an effort to create closer ties with the Taiwanese art and design community.
